A Skinning knife is a very sharp and sometimes very large cutting implement. In fact, it is so large and daunting that it is often classified as a hand to hand weapon. Smaller skinning knives exist, but the large ones are more ubiquitous. Traditionally, its primary use was in skinning animals, mostly animals that the hunter had already shot or trapped. The original skinning knife had other classical uses beyond merely skinning, like slicing the skin, scraping the hair, or trimming the edges. It may also be called a bowie knife, a Damascus knife, a hunting knife, a scimitar, a blade, or simply an outdoor knife.

Skinning was needed to primarily preserve the skin, since the skin of furry mammals is often highly prized for coats, jackets, comforters, and so on. Even now, skins of muskrats or beavers are sold on the open market, mostly for warm winter coats. Muskrats are small semi-aquatic mammals that are plentiful in northern states like Minnesota, Maine, and Michigan. They both have a rat-like face, and are not thought of as “cute”. Proper processing of their skins would require the use of a skinning knife, or probably a set of these knives to do the job thoroughly.
Skinning knives are also popular with criminals and others that wish to terrorize, harm, or otherwise utilize these weapons against other people. Certain urban gang members are heavy skinning knife users, and they have taken the skinning knife as their trademark. This underground usage is meant to scare and do bodily harm to other human beings. Skinning knives can be purchased at hunting and fishing supply stores, online stores, some complete cooking and kitchen supply stores, and at many major malls in America. As with all other potential weapons, the primary intention is their peaceful and customary usage.
Fantasy skinning knives are also very popular. For instance, the fantasy multi-user video game World of Warcraft [WOW] has a plethora of skinning knives that the participants may find, purchase, or otherwise acquire. Much like the traditional skinning knife, the WOW skinning knife is very durable, prized for its utility and useful for getting points and scoring in the game. There are other implements in WOW that are comparable to the skinning knife, such as a slicer, a striker, or a dagger. These instruments would have a similar range to reality skinning knives, in overall size, weight, curvature, length, and handle grip. The skinning knife is a useful tool when it is operated in its safe and normal mode.
